This coming weekend is the last viable one for concerts in November. So we have a pile-up of events on the agenda this week, as everyone in town tries to get something heard before Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving, it will be time for that dreaded December tradition, the holiday concerts and umpteen performances of a certain Handel oratorio that must not be named.
FREE, FREE, FREE:
>> This week musicians from two important summer music festivals will be playing in Washington. On Wednesday (November 15, 7:30 p.m.), performers from the Marlboro Festival will give a free concert at the Freer Gallery of Art. The program features music by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, as well as Bartók’s fourth string quartet. Reserve your seat through Ticketmaster for the usual fees, or arrive early to get an unused seat.
>> On Saturday (November 18, 8 p.m.), musicians from the Bard Festival play a recital at the Library of Congress. Performers from Bard College Conservatory present music by Liszt, Brahms, and others, with pianist Melvin Chen, cellist Robert Martin, and pianist Jeremy Denk (who writes an entertaining blog about his life as a professional pianist). Again, Ticketmaster or wait on line.
>> The free museum series continue again this week, of course. On Sunday (November 19, 4 p.m.), pianist Dudana Mazmanishvili plays a recital at the Phillips Collection. The same evening (November 19, 6:30 p.m.), countertenor Peter de Groot joins harpsichordist Stephen Ackert and viola da gamba player Daniel Rippe for a program of 17th-century Dutch music at the National Gallery of Art. Note that this concert will take place in a different venue, the West Building Lecture Hall. Neither of these concerts requires a ticket or reservation, but arrive early for a good seat.
