Thanks to the hard work of voting rights activists, a few Congressional allies, and the wisdom of the American people in November, the District is coming closer and closer to finally gaining some voting representation. Legislation to grant the District a voting seat in the House looks like it’s moving forward, D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton can once again vote on amendments on the House floor, and D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty has started asking aides to refer to him as “Governor Fenty.”
But if you really want to know how things are between the District and Congress, today is your day. D.C. Vote, Our Nation’s Capital and the League of Women Voters of the National Capital Area are hosting a panel discussion on voting rights, the structural deficit and Home Rule issues. Speakers will include Norton, Rep. Albert Wynn (D-Md.), a senior staffer from the office of Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.), Dr. Michael K. Fauntroy of George Mason University and Dr. Gary Young of the George Washington University. The event will take place at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation (212 East Capitol Street) and will start at 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served. We hear Norton is gonna bring a batch of her Disenfranchisement Brownies. Yum!
