Given the District’s status as something of a federal colony, members of Congress often find themselves expressing opinions about local matters or, worse yet, micro-managing the city. They hate our gun laws, propose using the District as a laboratory for a flat tax, threaten us over gay marriage and won’t let us have medical marijuana. And now one is speaking out about the city’s smoking ban.
The Hill reports today that Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Col.), everyone’s favorite immigrant hater, is none-too-happy with having to step outside to enjoy his cigars. Speaking before last week’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Rep. Tancredo said of the ban:
I live in a place run by what I refer to as the lifestyle Nazis here in Washington, D.C., that don’t let you do things like smoke in public places, for God’s sake.
Since we feel somewhat sorry for Rep. Tancredo, who himself is forced to work in an environment so repressive he’s constantly got cliched and offensive Nazi comparisons on the brain, we’re taking up a collection to send over a six-month supply of nicotine gum. Better chew it fast, though — the lifestyle Nazis might go after gum next.
