The Maryland women’s basketball team won’t have a chance to repeat as national champions. The Terps lost to Mississippi in the second round 89-78. Maryland came into the tournament as a 2-seed, and their early exit is something of a disappointment, especially considered they returned almost their entire team from last year’s title run. Foggy Bottom folks still have something to cheer for, however, as the Colonials beat Texas A&M on Monday and will face top seed North Carolina on Sunday.

Ole Miss were determined to not repeat their performance in a loss to Maryland earlier in the season, when the Terps beat them 110-79 in the Bahamas. This time the Rebel defense was stifling, making 15 steals and forcing 29 Maryland turnovers. The Terps were also outshot .418 to .476, and were down by 21 at one point.

Fans (or the lack thereof) in Foggy Bottom still have hope, however, as Joe McKeown’s Colonials beat A&M 59-47 to make it into the Sweet 16. Despite having their star center, Jessica Adair, on the bench with foul trouble, GW used their usual strong defense to force the Aggies into shooting .328 from the field and 3-17 from the three point line.

The Colonials have a tough test coming up against North Carolina in Dallas, though the Tar Heels were almost upset by 9-seed Notre Dame. This is the first time GW has been into the Sweet 16 since 1997, when they also beat then 1-seed North Carolina to make it to the Elite 8. The Colonials must be hoping for history to repeat itself.
