The Wizards and Capitals are on summer vacation. The only Redskins news prominently features Ron Mexico and is not related to sports at all (well, human sports anyway). Despite these non-developments, this weekend has some intriguing aspects regarding actual Washington sports.
>> Boxing comes to the District as the brothers Peterson square off in co-featured bouts at the D.C. Armory. Lamont and Anthony Peterson are a combined 42-0 with 25 knockouts between them. Anthony will be taking on a guy nicknamed “The Butcher” in defense of his NABO lightweight championship, while Lamont faces a veteran from Atlantic City they call “The Eastern Beast“. Boxing Along The Beltway has some great coverage of the event, while The Bog gets the essential pre-fight quotations. The card has drawn considerable attention nationally, as it will be featured on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights. Attendees likely to get some love from the Deuce’s cameras include Adrian Fenty, Caron Butler, Steve Francis, Monta Ellis, and “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather. Doors open for the seven-bout card at 7 p.m.; ESPN2 coverage starts two hours later.
>> D.C. United host 2006 MLS Cup Champions Houston Dynamo this Saturday at RFK. The two teams are heading in opposite directions at this point in the season. United’s win in Toronto last Saturday gave them their first winning streak of the season, while Houston has lost their last two. After an abysmal start to the season, United seem to have found their stride and their swag. Last week’s impromptu karaoke session was followed by a flat clinic in move bustin’. Agent Steinz captured all the action, which featured Nicholas “the Instigator” Addlery and Stephen DeRoux, the consensus king of the dance floor. United will try and translate their locker room swag into three points Saturday night. Game starts at 7:30 p.m.
>> Meanwhile, RFK’s other denizens continue to rack up the W’s. Last night’s 4-3 victory over the Reds won the Nationals the series, 3-1. In the process, they climbed a rung in the NL standings, knocking Cincinnati to the basement. They’ve now won 10 of 14 after losing eight in a row. This weekend, the Nationals play a similar role to D.C. United when they face a struggling defending champion. A series sweep would give them a better record than the Cardinals. You can catch the action on your cable-equipped television set on the MASNs (Fri. 8 p.m., Sat. 7 p.m., Sun. 2 p.m.).
