Powerful winds blowing through the D.C. area since last night are wreaking havoc on the city’s trees and power lines. The District Department of Transportation says it has been working to respond to almost 80 reports of downed trees or branches blocking city streets, sidewalks and alleyways since the winds began on Thursday. Some trees have also fallen on top of vehicles and buildings. Here’s just a small sampling of the kinds of calls D.C.’s tree crews are dealing with today:

11:14 p.m. Thursday: Report of a large fallen tree blocking traffic lanes at 16th Street and Kalmia Rd. NW.

8:59 a.m. Friday: Report of a large tree limb having fallen in an alley near 6144 31st Street NW. The limb is blocking the alley.

9:08 a.m. Friday: A tree fell down across the road in the 600 block of G Street SE NE and hit a government vehicle.

10:17 a.m. Friday: A tree fell on top of a car in front of 25 N Street NW.

10:44 a.m. Friday: A tree fell on someone’s home at 3119 W Street SE.

10:50 a.m. Friday: Tree branches are knocking down power lines in the vicinity of 1357 C Street NE.

As always, if you see a downed tree, call 311 or tweet to @DDOTDC to report it. And if power lines are involved, stay away, and call 911 or Pepco’s emergency line, 1-877-PEPCO-62 (1-877-737-2662).

The wind is keeping the D.C. Fire/EMS department and Pepco crews equally busy. Pepco’s outage map shows hundreds of customers without power across D.C. and nearby Maryland counties. And beyond the numerous assists firefighters have made with downed power lines today, they also responded to the still under construction “Social” Safeway in the 1800 block of Wisconsin Ave. NW this morning after two workers lost their footing due to the wind and fell 30 feet to the ground. The two men are said to have sustained serious but not life threatening injuries, and were transported to a nearby hospital.
