The Terps may have redeemed themselves on the basketball court Wednesday night, but the jury’s still out on how students and police handled themselves as the celebration spilled out onto Route 1 in College Park.
The Post reports that 27 people were arrested in the skirmish, many of them University of Maryland students. WUSA9’s video footage clearly shows officers using violent tactics against some of the revelers: one student was hit in the head repeatedly with a night stick, while another was beaten with a riot shield. Some of those celebrating are also shown pulling down a street sign, and later, a smaller group of students set fire to a tree on campus, according to the Post.
Predictably, police are saying their actions were justified, while students are complaining of brutality. The scene last night doesn’t appear to have been at the level of the 2002 riot, which saw students throwing glass bottles at police. But campus police officials say that doesn’t mean they weren’t provoked. From the Post:
Paul Dillon, a spokesman for the University of Maryland police department, said many university officers were involved in post-game duties at the arena and were not along Route 1 when the crowd first formed. But Dillon said he eventually made his way down to the scene and said he saw people tossing 12-inch ice projectiles at officers.
“They were just picking up chunks at throwing them at police,” Dillon said.
So, big chunks of snow? Here we go again.
