Courtesy Alexandria PoliceThieves in Alexandria have made off with over $60,000 thanks to a skimming device that was installed at an ATM at the Wachovia Bank branch at 3624 King Street, Alexandria Police say.
The device was discovered by an ATM technician on Sunday, Feb. 28. Police say the engineer took photos of the device and then went inside the bank to report it. But by the time he came back, the device was gone.
Several customers have reportedly already come forward with fraudulent transactions on their ATM cards. The skimming device allowed the thieves to steal customers’ account information, and may have even captured their PINs. The Alexandria Police department continues to investigate, and is asking for anyone who used this particular ATM on Feb. 28 to check and make sure no unauthorized charges have been made to their accounts.
Anyone with additional information about this case is asked to call Detective David Hoffmaster at 703-838-5002 or the Crime Solvers tip line at 703-838-4858.
