According to a City Paper report, Gray spokesperson Traci Hughes said that the mayoral candidate “started removing the fence last week.” In case you had forgotten, Gray was accused in December of not obtaining the proper permits for the installation of an aluminum fence around the perimeter of his home in Hillcrest. In response, the Chairman’s office told DCist that Gray assumed that the contractors he hired to construct the fence were going to be taking care of the permitting — an admission which created more questions than it provided answers. Gray then debated with the District’s Public Space Committee, who ruled in May that the Chairman had not provided sufficient reason to exceed D.C.’s height limit on fences in the public right of way. Even though the offending portion of the construction has been removed, I doubt that this is the last time we hear the Fenty camp bring it up as the campaign heats up. Damn — and here we thought that with the alteration of the fence, we might actually get to talk about the specifics of the issues facing this city.
