For the past few days, the D.C. region has been obsessing over whether or not we’d be blessed with a white Christmas this morning. Look outside your window, the answer is no. The more important issue now is the winter storm watch placed on the entire metro region, Loudoun, Fauquier and Frederick counties for all of Sunday. According to the Capital Weather Gang, today’s light and fluffy dusting from the north will combine with a heartier multi-grain system from the south to form a snow-covered D.C. sandwich potentially more than half a foot thick. Throw in a little arugula, pickled onions and Dijon mustard, and you’ve got yourself an epic sammy worthy of Davy DCist.

Many snowfall estimates still range wildly, from less than 1” to more than 6”, hence the reason why the National Weather Service has the metro area under a storm watch rather than a warning. We will have to wait to see where along the storm’s path snow will start falling to gain a better idea of what we’re facing. But when the Weather Gang says this storm will develop “explosively,” expect anything to occur.

Implications for traveling tomorrow will be hairy — think Chewbacca hairy. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is urging air travelers to immediately check their airlines for flight changes or cancellations. Already, Delta has canceled about 500 flights while many airlines are making arrangements and waiving penalties for travelers to make flight alterations.

The winter storm watch advisory after the jump.
