There’s no relief from the flurry of violence in Prince George’s County: a 22-year-old University of Maryland student was killed in a robbery attempt this afternoon. The death marks the 11th homicide in Prince George’s County this year, an unbelievable figure for a County which only recorded 96 killings in 2010. (UPDATE: After we posted this item, WTOP was kind enough to update the Google map which has the location of each homicide committed so far in 2011. We’ve embedded on the right.)
According to an ABC7 News report, the student was a marijuana dealer. The shooting occurred at a rented home on the 8800 block of 38th Avenue in College Park, which is located a short distance northwest of the university’s campus. University of Maryland police are on the lookout for a black man in dark clothing.
Prince George’s County police have previously stated that they believe the uptick in murders to be due to a “drug nexus” in the county. According to ABC7, of the 11 murders so far this year, eight, including today’s, have been deemed drug-related. The county’s police department recently reorganized the force in order to try and curb the violence.
