Look, Washington Examiner, we know you’re bummed out about not actually having crime-fighting superpowers. We would be too! But that’s no reason to start wildly promoting the idea that pedestrian accidents are on the rise exclusively because Michelle Obama is encouraging people to fight obesity by walking.

Examiner crime reporter Scott McCabe filed this story about a study conducted by the Governors Highway Safety Association. The study notes that despite a decrease in overall traffic deaths, pedestrian deaths are on the rise. According to McCabe’s report, this prompted GHSA executive director Barbara Harsha to blame Obama for the uptick:

But the “get moving” movement, led by Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign to eliminate childhood obesity, could be to blame, Harsha told The Washington Examiner. “There’s an emphasis these days to getting fit, and I think people doing that are more exposed to risk [of getting hit by a vehicle],” said Harsha, who conceded to having no scientific evidence that the Let’s Move campaign has led to an increase in walkers and runners, or deaths.

McCabe then quotes Harsha as calling the conclusion “speculative,” and admitting that “further study is needed.” Uh, yeah, both I and — if I could be so bold as to speak for them — the hundreds of pedestrians who were hit last year in and around D.C. will go ahead and concur on that last point.
