Move over, Da Vinci: this morning, graduate students at the University of Maryland are testing a human-powered helicopter in the hopes of winning the Sikorsky Prize, a $250,000 award established by the American Helicopter Society that has gone unclaimed for more than 30 years. The helicopter, named Gamera and made of wood, foam, mylar, and carbon fiber, is powered by an individual who pedals furiously to get the craft in the air. The prize will be awarded if the students are able to get Gamera into a three-meter, 60 second hover while controlling it within a 32.8-feet square.

You can watch a livestream of today’s test flights; below is footage of the team’s preparations for today’s attempts to win the prize.
