In yesterday’s Go Home Already, we noted a story in the Metro Weekly about a gay D.C. couple who were called “faggots” by a cashier at the Waterfront Safeway last weekend. The paper has since followed up by publishing this video, recorded by one of the man’s neighbors, in which the cashier apologizes for using the slur.
As Metro Weekly reports:
When local gay D.C. resident Andrew Kloman read about what happened to Jason Morgan and his partner Brendan Harrington at the Safeway store at 1100 4th St. SW, he couldn’t sit still.
”Initially I called the store a couple of times, and asked to speak to a manager but I didn’t get a response,” Kloman says.
[…]
Kloman was given a comment card to fill out by Safeway’s customer service desk. Instead he picked up an apple and headed to a register, looking for the cashier identified as ”D’Angela” in the complaint filed by Harrington and Morgan with the D.C. Office of Human Rights.
Kloman’s video is incredibly awkward, as one might imagine — but the cashier, ”Deangelah,” does apologize, albeit half-heartedly.
“I apologize for calling…you guys know his name?…okay, well, I apologize for whoever he is, whatever his name is, for calling him a ‘f’ing fag,’ and I’m deeply sorry if I offended him in any type of way,” she says.
The newspaper reports that the couple, Jason Morgan and Brendan Harrington, remain “really offended” that the cashier wasn’t fired or suspended by the grocer. The couple has filed a complaint with the D.C. Office of Human Rights over the incident.
UPDATE: Via Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells’ blog, here’s Safeway’s official statement regarding the incident:
“We extend our sincerest apologies to Mr. Morgan and Mr. Harrington for the completely unacceptable comments by our employee. Safeway employs and serves people from all backgrounds, and absolutely does not condone discrimination or intolerance of any kind by any staff member. The company is reviewing the matter and will take appropriate corrective action.”
