As our commentariat pointed out, Mayor Vince Gray will be bagging groceries at the Southwest Waterfront Safeway this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. But as amusing as that may sound — and as legitimate as the cause Gray’s packing bags for, breast cancer research, is — it’s actually not the food-related event we’re most looking forward to seeing the Mayor participate in this week.

That honor has to go to the tomorrow’s Nordic Food Day inside D.C. Public Schools, part of the school system’s International Food Program. The event, sponsored by the Embassies of Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland and Denmark, will feature “6 Nordic cultural ambassadors, 7 Nordic chefs, 4 Nordic musicians, and a special visit from HRH Prince Daniel of Sweden” to District schools, not to mention a sampling of Nordic dishes to nosh on, including Lingonberry Juice, Swedish meatballs and Norwegian Salmon with dill. (What, no lutefisk?)

So, hey, while he’s at Safeway, maybe Gray can pick up the ingredients for some Svinekoteletter. You know, for the potluck. Just…don’t forget your receipt or anger the cashiers, Mr. Mayor. Trust us on that one.
