Believe it or not, the WMATA Board of Directors was still talking about station names this morning. But after more than two hours of chatter at a lengthy committee session, it appears as if they have finally settled on a few.
According to reports, the changes sent by the committee to the full board (which meets later today) include:
>> Navy Yard would become Navy Yard-Ballpark
>> New York Avenue would become NoMa-Gallaudet U with New York Avenue as a subtitle for one year to reduce confusion
>> King Street would become King Street-Old Town
>> Waterfront-SEU would become Waterfront
Georgia Ave-Petworth, Forest Glen and Smithsonian would remain as is — for now.
Of course, the agency isn’t done coming up with new names: Silver Line stations will need to have their official names decided on sometime in the next few months, and the board left the door open to revisit the decisions on currently existing stations, namely the decision to add landmarks to the Smithsonian (National Mall) and Forest Glen (Holy Cross Hospital) stations.
UPDATE: The board made the recommendations official this afternoon.
