In a process aimed at cutting down on cluttered station names and making them more accurate, tomorrow Metro will significantly trim the name of the existing New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U Red Line station—from that point on, it will be known simply as “NoMa-Gallaudet U.”

The renaming is a huge win for NoMa, a neighborhood that barely existed a decade ago and first seemed like an uninspired branding attempt by realtors. (The NoMa Business Improvement District was only created in 2007.) Over the last six years, reported the Post last year, there has been $3 billion in investment in the neighborhood, and there is currently some 16 million square feet of development there. The neighborhood has some 1,400 residents. The Metro station itself is quite young, having only opened in November 2004.

Other stations that will see changes to their names are Navy Yard (will become “Navy Yard-Ballpark”), King Street (will become “King St.-Old Town) and Waterfront-SEU (will drop “SEU”). Forest Glen, Foggy Bottom, Shaw-Howard, and Medical Center will all have “H” added to their signage to indicate proximity to hospitals. A number of other stations will see their secondary names dropped down to a second line, so Gallery Place-Chinatown” will become “Gallery Place” with “Chinatown” below it.

“New York Avenue” will remain on a second line of the NoMa station’s signage for a year, then be taken off.
