Yesterday, in response to a march on and sit-in at her department’s headquarters, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier said that the Occupy DC protests had gotten “increasingly confrontational and violent.” This morning, the Occupy DC media team has struck back, releasing the above footage of “a man that available witnesses have identified as a police officer” putting his hands around the throat of a protester on Friday night.
“This is yet another example of a series of violent actions against peaceful Occupy DC protesters on Friday night,” notes the protest’s website. “Mayor Gray and MPD Chief Lanier should condemn the violence in this video and make clear that violence against peaceful protesters will not be tolerated.”
The website then calls for a truce of sorts.
“We have had a calm relationship with law enforcement during recent weeks and we hope to move forward peacefully with them in the future,” states the text presented alongside the clip. Yesterday, Lanier stated that, going forward, police would “adjust [their] tactics as needed to assure safety.”
UPDATE: City Paper’s Ben Freed gets reaction from MPD, which says that they “disagree with [the] assertion” that the protester was being “choked.”
