Oscar Ramiro Ortega (U.S. Park Police)

As the search for Oscar Ramiro Ortega — the man suspected of firing a gun in the proximity of the White House and striking a window on the presidential residence — continues, federal officials have announced that a task force has been established to bring him into custody.

With the establishment of the task force, the number of law enforcement agencies currently looking for Ortega has increased to five, including the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, U.S. Park Police and the Secret Service.

Ortega is believed to have fired an AK-47 a Chinese-made assault rifle from inside a vehicle at the intersection of 16th Street and Constitution Avenue NW last Friday night before dropping the weapon on the 2300 block of Constitution Avenue and fleeing. Bullets were subsequently found on the grounds of the White House on Tuesday, as was damage to a pane of ballistic glass on the exterior of the presidential mansion.

The Park Police have charged Ortega with one felony count of carrying a dangerous weapon; officials are not yet sure whether Ortega was actually aiming at the White House or not, though they have issued warnings that he is potentially dangerous. (President Barack Obama was not in the residence at the time of the incident.) Ortega, who has several distinctive tattoos, including one reading “Israel” on the left side of his neck, has been arrested in the past on drug and assault charges in Idaho, Utah and Texas. It has been reported that Ortega was questioned by police in Arlington shortly before the shooting occurred, but was released.
