A day after protesters at the Occupy D.C. encampment at McPherson Square dropped a massive tarp over the statue of Gen. James McPherson in protest of a planned enforcement of anti-camping regulations, the U.S. Park Police have asked occupiers to remove it.
According to one protester in the park, the police gave no timeline but said they wanted the blue tarp — referred to as the “tent of dreams” — removed today. In response, occupiers have called an emergency meeting at noon to decide how to proceed.
Last Friday Park Police said that they would start enforcing anti-camping regulations yesterday at noon, but no action was taken against any protesters in McPherson Square or Freedom Plaza. A hearing is currently underway in a D.C. court on a motion filed by an occupier requesting that the Park Police be forbidden from enforcing the anti-camping rules. The Park Police has said that tents can remain, but no one can sleep at either site.
A call to the Park Police was not immediately returned.
