For more than a week now, the high temperature in D.C. has topped 95 degrees. The eight-day streak continuing today matches a record set in 1987 and matched in 1993 and 2002, Capital Weather Gang writes.
And by midday tomorrow, summer 2012 will most likely set a new record, with the projected high temperature again due to exceed 95 degrees. In fact, barring some unexpected relief, the current heatwave isn’t expected to break until early next week. If forecasts hold true, the daily high temperature will hit the high 90s or low 100s every day between now and Sunday, potentially extending this sweaty, swampy streak to a record 11 days.
Care to relive the summer grossness? Check out the daily recorded high temperatures since this series of brutally hot days began:
- June 28: 98
- June 29: 104
- June 30: 97
- July 1: 99
- July 2: 95
- July 3: 98
- July 4: 99
- July 5: 101, recorded at 2:45 p.m.
And the forecast through the weekend is not forgiving at all. Capital Weather Gang expects tomorrow to be an even 100 degrees, Saturday to top out at 103 and Sunday to cool off just a bit to 98.
No surprise, then, that the National Weather Service’s extreme heat warning extends through Saturday evening. Seriously, though, remember to drink lots and lots of fluids and to stay in air-conditioned locations. (Pepco still reports having 15,000 customers in D.C. and Maryland without power.) It’s going to be a nasty, sticky weekend.
