Photo by spectremanWhy do people like to visit D.C. so much? Many reasons: history, architecture, museums, the seat of power, and food courts that can be filled with middle schoolers. We think this lady pretty much sums it up.
Overheard of the Week
On an extremely crowded 5A bus to Dulles:
A mid-fifties woman is loudly recapping her visit to the District: “Well, we saw the White House, rode the subway and sat in Dupont Circle…we also went to the Jefferson Memorial where we saw rats and a couple get engaged. So yeah, I think we had the full D.C. experience.”
After the jump, names, interns, baseball, and more.
As always, Overheard in D.C. relies on you to send in the good stuff. Please use our special email address and tell us who, where, when, and in what situation.

Ugh
Thursday on the Orange Line towards New Carrollton:
Looked like a bunch of young male interns going to the ballgame.
Intern #1: “Virginia owns all the alcohol stores, so you have to get your alcohol there.”
Intern #2: “Does that mean we can’t get any brews at the ballpark?”
Intern #3: “No, the ballpark’s in D.C.”
Intern #2: “Oh.”

Too bad it’s not the D.C. Cab capital. Mr. T food fights at Florida Avenue Grill, every day!!
In front of Target in Columbia Heights around noon:
A woman to a group of friends: “Have you seen those girls with mohawks AND weaves? D.C.’s starting to look like the Hunger Games capital.”

Law firms: super fun places to work!
At a law firm office in the afternoon:
Young lady talking to a young man: “So now you know everything there is to know about me. There is no need for further conversation between us.”

But only one important one: STAND TO THE RIGHT!!!
On the Red Line from Silver Spring to Metro Center midday on a Monday:
Pretty much everyone in the car looks like a local. There’s the obvious tourist family (gripping their bags tightly) who is standing right next to the map.
Mother to family: “You can tell all of these people are tourists because they’re wearing flip flops. You’re not supposed to wear them on the escalators.”
Dad: “They have a lot of rules about the escalator here.”

At least they have some self-knowledge
At the Nationals game against the Phillies:
Two Phillies fans, reacting to a loud, obnoxious Nats fan:”Don’t try to act like us, we’re not role models. This is not a good lifestyle choice for you.”

Names are confusing, part 1.
On the Georgetown Campus:
Man in suit is talking on cell phone and is obviously very frustrated/annoyed. “Well when you said to meet you at the subway I thought you were talking about the restaurant, so that’s where I’ve been waiting…” (pause) “… Yeah I thought it was a pretty weird place to meet too but I didn’t want to say anything.”

Why a teacher’s first job is erasing parental “education”
Crossing the street towards West Potomac Park:
Tourist son looks at the river: “It doesn’t look like it’s moving at all.”
Tourist dad: “That’s because it’s a big river, and it’s really close to the ocean, so it slows down as it gets closer.”

And apparently current events are not your strong suit
At the Nationals game on Tuesday, July 31:
Guy: “Did you hear that two cities declared bankruptcy in California? Apparently Arnold Schwarzenegger is too busy shooting movies to pay attention to what’s going on in California.”
——
Names are confusing, part 2.
A tourist family (mom, dad, two kids in early teens) in Dupont Circle:
Boy: “They have weird names for everything here. Instead of ‘pop’ they say ‘soda.'”
Mom: “Yeah, and they call highways ‘beltways.'”

Comments time! Why did she?
Near Dupont Circle around 9:30 a.m.:
Two mid-twenties women, crossing the street: “…and that’s when I started getting all my prescription drugs from Africa.”
