A student was shot and wounded Wednesday afternoon on the campus of Coolidge High School, D.C. police said.

The male victim is being treated after shots rang out about 3:24 p.m., Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump said. He was found conscious and breathing with non-life-threatening injuries and taken to a nearby hospital. The student, whose age was not released is a student at the school, she said.

Officers on the scene have one suspect, also a student, in custody, police said. A police spokesman said a second suspect, a black male wearing tan pants and orange shirt, was seen running toward the Takoma Park Metrorail station.

Police are investigating the shooting as an assault with intent to kill, the spokesman said.

Coolidge High School is located at 6315 Fifth Street NW in Takoma.
