A person at the Farragut North station on Metro’s Red Line was killed after being struck by an oncoming train this morning, the transit agency said. The death was later ruled intentional, making it the fifth suicide this year carried out by a person placing themselves in front of a train.

It is also the first such incident since Metro launched a public-service campaign and hotline to prevent suicides on its train network.

The person was struck at 10:56 a.m. after standing in the way of a Shady Grove-bound train entering the station, Metro said.

Due to the ensuing investigation, Red Line trains are currently single-tracking between Judiciary Square and Dupont Circle. Additionally, all trains at Dupont Circle, Farragut North, Metro Center, Gallery Place and Judiciary Square are boarding on the Glenmont-bound side.
