Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) pleaded guilty today to drunk driving charges stemming from an arrest last month in Alexandria. Crapo, 61, was arrested about 12:45 a.m. on December 23 after an Alexandria Police Department officer stopped him after he drove through a red light.

Crapo, a Mormon who previously made statements that he follows his religion’s teachings of abstaining from alcohol, registered a blood alcohol content level of 0.11 percent, well above Virginia’s legal limit of .08 percent.

Following his arrest, Crapo said he did not intend to fight the charges. “I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter,” he said in a December 24 statement.

After pleading guilty in Alexandria General District Court, Crapo was sentenced to a suspended jail sentence of 180 days along with one year of unsupervised probation. He was also ordered to pay a $250 fine.
