A demonstration at American University, planned in response to the decision not to indict a Ferguson, Mo. police officer in the death of an unarmed teen, took on new life this afternoon as news broke that the police officer who put a Staten Island man in a fatal chokehold would not be indicted.

A week after a grand jury decided not to indict officer Darren Wilson in the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, a grand jury declined to indict NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo in the homicide of 43-year-old Eric Garner.

Hundreds of people marched around American University’s Northwest D.C. campus chanting “No Justice! No Peace!” while holding a banner with the faces of African Americans who have been killed by law enforcement officials. The demonstrators also chanted “Hands up! Don’t shoot!” and “Black lives matter!” as video taken from the scene shows. The demonstration began with speeches and a “lie-in.”
