One man is dead and another severely wounded after a gunman in a vehicle opened fire on an SUV on the Anacostia Freeway this morning.
The Post reports that the shooting happened during morning rush hour, just before 9 a.m., in the middle of the northbound lanes of I-295. Currently, the northbound lanes of I-295, from the Beltway to just north of Exit 2, in D.C. are closed and expected to stay that way for some time as police investigate the incident.
As of now, police aren’t sure what caused the shooting. At first, police believed the incident to be the result of road rage, but Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier later said that “it appeared the gunman had followed the SUV onto the highway from Virginia,” the Post reports.
As police investigate the incident, they’re asking for the public’s assistance in locating the alleged vehicle the gunman was in, which is described as a “dark-colored sedan, possibly a Toyota Camry or a Honda.” Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 202-727-9099.
