Brelyn Bowman, daughter of pastor Dr. Mike Freeman, offered up a gift for her father when she was married in Prince George County earlier this month: a certificate signed by her doctor proving that her hymen was intact. At age 13, Brelyn vowed to save herself for marriage and she made good on her promise in a very public way.
She posted on Instagram, “I was able to present a certificate of purity to him signed by my doctor that my hymen was still intact. Also the covenant he gave me when I was 13. When you honor God, your life will automatically honor others! I love you daddy.”
That medically dubious certificate (because it is not a rare thing to “break” your hymen before having sex) has attracted attention and controversy.
At first Brelyn brushed aside the controversy:
But after the honeymoon, Brelyn and her new husband Timothy Bowman used the attention to promote their views on sex. The pair went on Good Day D.C. to explain the certificate and promote their views abstinence before marriage, while the hosts made a bunch of cringey sex jokes:
Brelyn says that her father never demanded it, “He was so excited because it’s not nothing he required. He didn’t ask, ‘I need you to go and present this.’ It was something because I kept my word.” It’s something of a family tradition, she added, “My sister, who was a virgin when she got married, did the same thing. And she was an example for me, so now I can be an example for others.”
