It may not be the most refined of culinary accolades, but if there is one thing the District is undoubtedly a champion of, it is happy hour. And over the years that we’ve been sharing our favorites, the traditional post-work “hour” has stretched well beyond its original confines. We’ve become particularly fond of the late-night specials that mean a true deal on dinner or drinks, for those who are willing to wait.

$1 OYSTERS @ EAT THE RICH:
If you’ve got a hankering for oysters but can’t stomach full price, head to Eat the Rich after 11 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and after 9:30 p.m. on Sundays, for a late night happy hour featuring $1 oysters and drink specials. Bonus: All of their bivalves are local, hailing from the Rappahannock River in Virginia or the Chesapeake. —Lynne Venart

THREE COURSES FOR $10 @ RED WHITE AND BASIL: This Adams Morgan newcomer wants to unload their pasta on you in the last 30 minutes of the night. After 9:30 p.m. on Sundays to Thursdays, scarf down a pasta dish, green salad, and cannoli for just $10 (normally the trio will run you $16). Closing time is listed at 10 p.m.— Josh Novikoff

HALF PRICE RAW BAR @ OLD EBBITT GRILL: This White House neighbor’s late night raw bar is one of D.C.’s legendary longstanding deals. Oysters and clams are half price from 11 p.m. until 1 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday, and until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturday (they originally only did it on weeknights but added the weekend hours due to popular demand). As the sixth highest-grossing independent restaurant in the country, they can swing the discount. Drinks remain full price at all times, and finding a seat at any of the four bars in the restaurant is a tall task when the shellfish are being shucked.—Josh Novikoff

DINO’S GROTTO:
Dino’s Grotto has an excellent happy hour, and on Sunday and Monday, it’s available all day/night long (they close at 10 p.m.). That means $4 draft beers; $6 wine, Negronis and Aperol Spritzes; and $8 house cocktails. And if you get hungry, there’s a smattering of classy bar snacks like deviled eggs, grilled shrimp, and duck fat potatoes for just $4.— Alicia Mazzara

BAR CHARLEY: If you’re drinking on a Monday, it ought to be at Bar Charley, where the happy hour runs until closing at 12:30. Snap up Old Fashioneds, Sazeracs, and other deftly mixed classic cocktails for six bucks, or draft tiki cocktails like the Suffering Bastard for only $5. Bar Charley’s tiki drinks are particularly delicious; they also taste deceptively free of alcohol. If you’re not careful, it can be a recipe for a rough Tuesday morning. Best sop it up with their happy hour food specials, like spicy, crunchy-fried Korean wings for $6 or a wagu beef burger for $10.— Alicia Mazzara

$12 DINNER @ DISTRICT COMMONS: Foggy Bottom is somewhat of a wasteland when it comes to cheap, tasty fun. Combine a business district’s 9-to-5 timeline with a college campus, and you get a weird mix of food options (especially late at night). But one spot stands out: District Commons on Washington Circle. There are a couple of options here if you’re looking for discounted specials. Their standard happy hour, which is every day from 4-6 p.m., gives us pennysavers a chance to try their specialty cocktails for only $5. The happy hour is available again starting at 10 p.m., which is just in time for their daily Dinner Farm Bell meal. Literally, they ring a bell, and for $12 you get a hearty, delicious meal (on Sundays, happy hour runs from 4 p.m. onward and they ring the bell at 8 p.m.) It’s the same quality as their standard menu options, but way cheaper and more like comfort food. —Tori Kerr, from a previous list

FUCK’IT BUCKET @ KBC
: Kangaroo Boxing Club’s Fuck’it Bucket is what it sounds like: a bucket (or bowl or dish) of whatever they choose to toss in there, served after 11 p.m. on weekends. You never know what you may get, but given KBC’s emphasis on meat and especially barbecue, you’ll have some idea. Pulled pork is usually a staple, maybe some cheesy stuff and various other proteins and starches: dinosaur chicken nuggets, eggs, french fries, duck, who knows? It’s an experience and a delicious, drunken one at that. — Andrew Wiseman

DATE NIGHT @ DANGEROUSLY DELICIOUS: Take a friend, lover, or just yourself—if you’re feeling famished—for date night at the pie purveyor’s H Street location (it closed for a few weeks of renovations in January, but should be back in business, with double the seats, soon). For $22, they serve up two slices of savory pie, two sweet slices, and two non-alcoholic drinks. The dine-in only special runs from 5 p.m.-11 p.m. on Monday through Wednesday. — Rachel Sadon

LATE NIGHT @ OYAMEL: This downtown Jose Andres spot has a good “hora feliz,” but the real trick is coming well into the evening (specifically, from 10 p.m. to midnight on Sunday through Wednesday and 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Thursday to Saturday) when most of the tourists have gone back to their hotels. Then you can cull together a very filling shared meal from a series of small plates, tacos (two for $4), and tortas ($6). — Rachel Sadon

HANK’S OYSTER BAR: I’m really not sure why so many places offer late night raw bar specials. Do people normally have drunken bivalve hankerings? But if you do crave something salty and slimy on your night out—and hey, it happens—it’s best to get your fix at the best of the best. Hank’s Oyster Bar always has a varied and delicious selection of its namesake (the oysters, not Hank … who to my knowledge is not on the menu). And from 10 p.m. to midnight (except for its Capitol Hill location, which has the deal til close instead), Hank’s offers all of its raw bar for half price. I know 10 p.m. isn’t exactly late night, but that evening limbo start time means that you can slurp some seafood as a post-dinner treat or as a nightcap of sorts.—Rachel Kurzius.

Hank’s Oyster Bar has multiple locations.
