Back in October, an elected buffoon wandering past a massive, privately funded development scratched his head and thought to himself that eight cranes in a six-block radius was just too many for the nation’s capital. So he advocated for economic hardship, writing “EIGHT tower cranes in 6 block radius. We need to cause a recession … in Washington DC.”

That ridiculous commentary didn’t really go anywhere. But Iowa Representative Rod Blum, thought his idea was so nice, he tweeted it twice. The second, sent on Monday evening, expanded on the idea with a photo of the Wharf that claimed it is being “built on the backs of US taxpayers.”

Sure, District residents are taxpayers. And the $2 billion The Wharf is being funded by private developers. And the city isn’t actually recovering all that well from the last recession (Brookings pegs D.C.’s recovery at 71st in “growth,” 91st in “prosperity,” and 72nd in “inclusion” when compared to other urban areas). And Iowa actually receives a higher share of federal funding as a percentage of state general revenue than the District does.

But no matter about them facts.

A spokesperson for Blum hasn’t responded to a request for comment. The congressman has since gone back to blithely tweeting about less incendiary matters, but responses to the tweet are still rolling in two days later, ranging from “are you high right now?” to spirited defenses of a city without real representation in Congress.
