The Department of the Interior received an order Friday to cease activity on its Twitter accounts after two heroic National Parks Service employees retweeted two disparaging message about the Trump Administration, including an unflattering side-by-side photo comparison of the National Mall during Obama’s 2008 inauguration and Trump’s inauguration. [Update: The NPS has apologized, more below]
According to the Washington Post, the order came down in an email sent to National Park Service employees. “All bureaus and the department have been directed by incoming administration to shut down Twitter platforms immediately until further notice,” the email stated.
The tweet that attracted the most attention, was originally posted by Binyamin Applebaum of the New York Times.

The account also retweeted a message from a California environmentalist named Anne Trumble pointing out that a range of issues had been wiped from the website of the new administration. (This was apparently expected—as the New York Times notes, all data from the old site was taken down when control of the site was handed off by the Obama administration.)
Civil rights, climate change, and health care scrubbed clean from White House website. Not a trace. https://t.co/Nc9zNIyN3d

As we know, Trump is very sensitive about any suggestion that something of his is insufficient in size.
Applebaum then continued to joke about the situation.
That ended well: https://t.co/i5ltiIS5VX

Trumble then responded:
Both @BCAppelbaum & I might have to walk our dogs elsewhere until this blows over. My tweet also implicated. @washingtonpost @Reinlwapo

Would not be surprising if Trump devotes time at his next public appearance to personally castigating both Applebaum (Lying media!) and Trumble (Only 518 followers! Sad!)
This morning, NPS apologized via its Twitter account.
We regret the mistaken RTs from our account yesterday and look forward to continuing to share the beauty and history of our parks with you pic.twitter.com/mctNNvlrmv
