Update: The National Parks Service announced Friday that the cherry blossoms have reached stage four on their way to peak bloom—peduncle elongation.

The peak bloom date for the cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin has been moved to a new range: March 21-24. That’s about a week earlier than the original peak bloom projection.

The National Parks Service announced the new forecast on Wednesday, attributing the shift to significantly warmer-than-expected temperatures and continued heat over the next few weeks. The Yoshino trees, which are monitored for peak bloom, reached the third stage of blooming—the extension of florets—on Monday, according to the #BloomWatch tracker.

This is, in fact, Washington’s seventh-warmest winter on record, with spring arriving 24 days early, per the USA National Phenology Network’s measurements of spring leaf out, one of the early biological indicators of the new season. Researchers have tied the early blossoming at D.C.’s Tidal Basin to broader signs of global warming.

If the NPS’ prediction holds, the 2020 cherry blossoms will outpace both 2018 and 2019 peak bloom dates (April 5 and April 1). The trees still have two more stages to go before reaching peak bloom, when 70 percent of the Yoshino trees have blossomed.

The District is bracing for a decline in tourism this spring, and that includes the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which typically draws more than 1.5 million visitors annually.

On Wednesday, organizers of the annual festival announced that several early events will be postponed or cancelled due to concerns about coronavirus. The festival was scheduled to run from March 20-April 14.

“It is a difficult decision and one that we do not take lightly,” Diana Mayhew, president and CEO of the festival, said in a release.
