Fifty-five ballot drop boxes are now open across D.C., allowing voters who have received a mail ballot to make their choices ahead of the Nov. 8 election.
The locations of the drop boxes are listed here; they will remain open until 8 p.m. on Election Day. (Note: The drop boxes look very similar to the boxes used by D.C. Health for COVID-19 tests, so make sure you drop your ballot in the right box. City workers do check both for ballots, so fear not if you do make a mistake.)
Mail ballots and drop boxes were first introduced two years ago during the November 2020 general election, as city elections officials pushed to adapt to pandemic-era restrictions. In both that election and the June 2022 primary, roughly two-thirds of voters opted to vote using their mail ballot. And among those using the mail ballot in June, some 56% chose to leave them at a drop box as opposed to mailing them in.
The D.C. Council is soon expected to give final approval to a bill that would make mail ballots and ballot drop boxes a permanent feature of elections.
For those who want to vote early at a polling place, early in-person voting opens Oct. 31 and runs until Nov. 6 at 25 vote centers around the District. Mail ballots can also be dropped off at vote centers during early in-person voting or on Election Day; if they are mailed in, they just have to be postmarked by Nov. 8 and received within seven days so as to be counted.
