In 1997, Mysha Lowe was photographed with Hillary Clinton at an event where the first lady read to D.C. elementary students. In 2004, she was 15, an honor student, and hoped to become a lawyer.

On July 24 she was killed in a shooting when the car she was in was caught in the line of fire when it was attacked by men targeting another occupant of the car.

At her funeral yesterday, Mayor Anthony Williams and Del. Eleanor Homes Norton were among the hundreds of of attendees:

” … Norton and Williams spoke of the recent terrorism scares that have gripped Washington, forcing police to beef up security around the World Bank and IMF headquarters.

They said they felt the problem of juvenile violence in the District was just as dangerous as terrorists plotting to bomb downtown buildings.

“I have to tell you that I am not afraid of the terrorists,” Norton said. “But I am afraid to go into the neighborhood where Myesha was shot.” … “

Elsewhere, Washington Post columnist Colbert King wrote about the incident in a column titled “Meanwhile, Back to Reality in D.C.” where he lists the 17 children under seventeen who have been murdered in the past year.
