Personally, this DCist will be heading down to Virginia Beach to drink gin and tonics and run the annual Rock ‘N’ Roll Half Marathon (let’s face it, probably while drunk). But if you’re sticking around the city on what’s apparently going to be a gorgeous weekend, here are some tips on how to fill your time.
FRIDAY:
– Big Boi, half of that whacky group Outkast, storms the stage tonight at Dream. 7 p.m., $20.
– As a former Arlingtonian, we hold a special place in our heart for local noise-rock band Metropolitan. If you’re into Sonic Youth or Pavement or good music in general, you’ll dig them. 9:30 p.m. tonight at the Black Cat, with Carribean and Zero Bridge, for the low low price of $7.
– “M. Butterfly”, a love story by David Henry Hwang and directed by Tazewell Thompson, begins its preview week this evening and goes through October 17 at Arena Stage.
SATURDAY:
Get the hell outside! We recommend the following:
– Check out the free D.C. Blues Festival at the Carter Barron Amphitheater. Besides great blues music from 1 p.m. – 9 p.m., there’ll be workshops and children’s activitives.
– The Post’s Weekend section has a story on kayaking in Mathews County, Va., apparently home of “some of the best sea-kayaking in the mid-Atlantic.” Read it and be inspired.
– Theater lovers can get their fix at the Page-to-Stage New Play Festival, taking place Saturday through Monday at the Kennedy Center. It’s part of the third annual Prelude Festival, a pre-season celebration of the performing arts.
SUNDAY:
You know what Labor Day means – no work on Monday! So you can stay up late on a school night.
– It’s Taint at DC9, a night for queer boys and girls who love their Britpop. Free!
– The National Symphony Orchestra holds their annual free Labor Day concert at 8 p.m on the West Lawn of the Capital. A rehersal concert will be held at 3:30.
MONDAY:
D.C. Metro Action points us to some ways we can spend our Monday off in a socially conscious manner.
– If sipping some wine and listening to jazz sounds like your idea of a day off, you can’t do much better than Herndon’s annual Labor Day Jazz and Wine Festival. 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.; $3, or $15 for wine tasting.
