It was quite a night for the local hoops teams, both on the college and professional level.
Gary Williams and his terrible Terps traveled to Durham and took out the previously unbeaten and 2nd ranked Blue Devils in a 75-66 contest that was much closer than the final score indicated. Winning on the road is always impressive but even more so for the Terps coming off their blowout loss to NC State last Sunday. Nik Caner-Medley paced the Terps with 25 points despite leaving the game with a sprained ankle.
The win evens Maryland’s ACC record at 3-3. As usual, Williams was unimpressed at playing the Blue Devils, “Duke’s a great team, but we’ve also played the No. 3 and No. 4 teams in the country. You have to be ready to play at this level. I personally like the challenge.”
Turning to the professional ranks, your Washington Wizards took out the Philadelphia 76ers and won their eighth straight home game last night. The Wiz used a 20-9 run in the 4th quarter on their way to a 117-107 victory that pushed their overall record to an impressive 26-15. Gilbert Arenas continued his stellar play of late with 33 points and nine assists, leading five Wizards in double figures and was quick to remind everyone that the NBA season is only halfway done. He told the Post, “We can’t be happy about where we are, everything that we’ve done to this point is nice, but there is no glory in half-season standings. We need to show a lot of people exactly what kind of team we are.”
The Wiz have a home and home series with Orlando this weekend that starts in Florida on Friday.
