Spring has finally sprung — or so it would seem. With weather looking to be above 50 degrees for the rest of the weekend, make sure to get out in the city and take advantage of what it has to offer. Capital Weather reminds us that some area ski destinations, like Whitetail and Liberty, are offering online coupons for 2-for-1 lift tickets if you want to squeeze in one more run.
FRIDAY:
>> Tonight is the opening reception for “Large Scale Mosaics,
Architectural Mosaics and The American Mosaic Project” (last night’s opening reception for the Society of American Mosaic Artists’ juried show at the Eclipse Gallery in Ballston is above in this DCist photo) at the Eleven Eleven Sculpture Space at 1111 Pennsylvania Ave. NW. There should be some pretty cool things to see, including a mosaic kimono. 6-8 p.m.; visit here for more information.
>> The extremely danceable Venezuelan disco-soul band, Los Amigos Invisibles, plays the Black Cat tonight. 9:30 p.m., $15. Check out this page for some mp3s.
>> This evening kicks off three days of the Washington Home and Garden Show at the Washington Convention Center. There’s everything from full gardens to home remodeling tips to seminars on landscape design. 11 a.m.-9 p.m.; $10.
SATURDAY:
>> This weekend brings the funny in the form of the DC Comedy Fest, which astutely notes that “D.C. is always funny – just not always on purpose.” There’ll be stand-up, improv, and lots and lots of laughter. Check the schedule and venue info here; tickets can be purchased here.
>> The National Acrobats of Taiwan tumble into town at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. They perform magic, martial arts, and all sorts of mind-boggling contortion. 4:30 p.m., $25-55. Get your tickets here.
>> It’s a bit of a hike, but as a former wahoo, we can’t help recommending a day trip down to Charlottesville for the lovely Virginia Festival of the Book. The Saturday schedule can be found here; and why not stop by a winery on your way back up Route 29? DCist Kanishka tasted some Barboursville wines last weekend.
SUNDAY:
>> The Gay Men’s Chorus of D.C. presents “Men! Men? Men…” at the GWU Lisner Auditorium. The tribute to male stars of film and musical theater starts at 3 p.m., and tickets are $15-45. Get your tickets here.
>> Washington Social Club bassist Olivia Mancini plays a free solo show at Galaxy Hut this evening. Last time we saw WSC play, she was wearing a silver cape, so we are ready to officially pronounce her awesome. Opener Jared Jay goes on at 9:45.
