(Classical music agenda by DCist contributor
Charles T. Downey of Ionarts)
If you are like this DCist, you are probably thinking about how to spend that big tax refund check. We suggest that an evening (or afternoon) of classical music, paired with an excellent meal if possible, is a worthy way of taking back your money from Uncle Sam and spending it on something you and that special someone can appreciate.
OPERA AND BALLET:
>> Your last chances to see the Washington National Opera production of Mozart’s ingenious comic opera The Magic Flute (at the Kennedy Center Opera House) are tonight at 7:30, and Sunday, at 1:30 p.m. We have yet to see that one (Philip Kennicott reviewed it favorably for the Post), so we might even see you there. The colorful fairytale sets were designed by cartoonist Gerald Scarfe (his work has been published in The New Yorker and other places). Tickets: $48 to (gasp!) $290. If you are a student or young professional between the ages of 18 and 35, sign up for the WNO’s Generation O program, to get a significant price reduction.
In fact, there is a special performance of The Magic Flute, for Generation O members, with a cast of up and coming singers from the WNO’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program, on Saturday at 4 p.m. No more excuses!
