Ding, Dong, the ‘Wicked Witch’ Is Dead! While the recent firing of the District’s taxicab commission chairman, Lee Williams, probably won’t signal any sweeping reforms in the immediate short term, those familiar with the “dysfunctional” agency say the move was necessary. One commissioner, Sandra Seegars, tells the Post that the “wicked witch” is dead.
But Williams’s greatest offense, Seegars and others said, was a simple failure to do his job. Weeks ago, for example, the commission agreed to raise taxi rates by $1 because of high gas prices. Williams failed to order stickers for the cabs to officially notify riders of the change, according to Seegars and Commissioner Inder Raj Pahwa.

Appeals Court to Move to Old Old City Hall: The appeals court for the District will be moving into one of Judiciary Square’s oldest structures. The Examiner reports that the restoration of the building, built in 1820, begins today. The distinctive Greek Revival building, which used to serve as the District’s city hall in the early 19th century, is in pretty rough shape. The work on the edifice is set to be completed in 2007.
