Congress Seeks to Overturn D.C. Gun Laws: Congressional Republicans have indicated that they will again push to overturn the District’s restrictive gun laws, reports WJLA. Led by Rep. Mark Souder (R-Ind.), who proposed similar legislation last year, and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-Texas), the initiative would allow District residents to keep handguns in their homes, effectively overturning a 1976 city law. D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams and D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton claimed the move would lead to an increase in violence and pandered to the gun lobby.
Tourism in District on the Rise: The Post is reporting that increases in tourism in the District have led to rising prices for area hotel rooms. Hotel occupancy rates stand at a high of 72 percent, driven by the forty conventions slated to take place in D.C. this year and estimated to bring in $705 million in revenue. Officials at AAA announced that Washington is fast becoming one of the country’s most expensive destinations — a family of four will pay $441 in food and lodging a day in the District, compared to $307 for New York state or $303 for Massachusetts.
Ehrlich Opponents Silenced: During an appearance by Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlich yesterday in the town of Princess Anne, where he formally veteod a bill that would have forced Wal-Mart to dedicate more money on health care for employees, Ehrlich opponents claimed they were forbidden from carrying signs or raising their voices under order of the governor’s staff, reports WTOP. Local police denied the claim.
