Defense Contractors Withhold Memorial Funds: As part as a major effort by the Examiner to encourage donations to the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial Fund, the paper reports that although Vice President Dick Cheney has given $25,000 and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has given $100,000 to construct the memorial, “just six of the top 30 U.S. defense contractors … have officially donated money to the project.” Those not giving include Verizon Communications, Halliburton, and the Titan Subsidiary BTG.
Eight Charter Schools Approved: The board that oversees charter schools in the District has approved eight charter schools to come on line this fall, the Examiner reports. That means one-quarter of D.C. Public School students will be attending the schools in the fall.
Carol Schwartz Introduces Alcohol Ban: As a response to the building political support for a smoking ban in D.C. bars, longtime ban opponent Councilmember Carol Schwartz introduced a law banning alcohol in bars to underscore her position on smoking, the Examiner and the AP report. While introducing the bill Schwartz said, “I never thought I could ban drinking just because I didn’t like it, but now I know I can … The impending smoking ban has empowered me.”
