This will be a much-needed weekend of rest for D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams. Beyond the usual daily toil of making sure the city doesn’t descend into a state of uncontrollable anarchy, Mayor Williams took to the streets this week to engage in a little old-fashioned manual labor.
On Tuesday Williams donned protective attire and sprayed away graffiti in Dupont Circle, part of his response to the millionth call the Mayor’s Citywide Call Center has received since its introduction under his tenure in 1999. The Department of Public Works — charged with removing graffiti from public and private property — deals with 1,400 such removal project a month, though no word on whether the mayor plans on joining in on the 1,399 other ones. And today Williams sported a paintbrush and joined in the creation of a new bike lane at 12th and D Streets NE, part of the 17-miles of bike lanes the District Department of Transportation has created since 2001.
Not to press, Mayor Williams, but there are plenty of potholes yet to be filled, and some much-needed track work along the Red Line. When can you get started?
