Chin up, art enthusiasts – the dismal month of August is finally coming to a close. With it are lots of closing gallery exhibits around town. Stay tuned for the barrage of shows that will be opening in area museums and galleries over the next few weeks.
>> Heading back to class at The University of Maryland? Be sure to stop in the Union Gallery to see “Every Day,” featuring artwork by Barbara Bergstrom, Tracy Templeton, Addison Will and Andy Moon Wilson that explores (and celebrates, it seems) the weight of daily existence. DCist likes the photo above, part of Addison Will’s “Baby Series.”
>> JET Artworks, Dupont’s newest gallery, opens a new show tomorrow. “Go Figure” includes work by 22 artists working in a variety of media, all linked by some use of the human figure. There’s a reception for the show on Saturday from 6-8 p.m., and one at the same time a week later.
>> The not-so-sentimental “Burnversions” closes Thursday in Reston. The slightly gruesome “Visible Skeleton” exhibit at the National Museum of Health and Medicine closes tomorrow. That show features paintings by New York-based artist Laura Ferguson, whose personal experience with scoliosis inspires her skeletally-focused art.
>> If you’re craving culture, head to the palatial Anderson House (located at 2118 Mass. Ave.) for a lecture tonight on tapestries. The free talk begins at 7 p.m. and includes a chance to see the recently conserved “Diana” series tapestries purchased by the Andersons.
>> You have until September 4 to see the colorful “Form & Color” at Zenith Gallery, “The Human Form” at Touchstone Gallery and the annual “1460 Wall Mountables at the DCAC. It’s also the last day to see the exhibit of Japanese prints by Hiroshige at The Phillips Collection, and “TEXTures” at the National Museum of African Art.
