King Memorial Crosses Approval Hurdle: The preliminary design for the Washington, D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial was unanimously approved yesterday by the National Capital Planning Commission, where other projects in the National Mall area have run afoul. The Commissioners largely praised the design and made only minor suggestions, the Post reports. At the same meeting the body requested an environmental impact statement for a new visitors’ center planned for the Vietnam Memorial deciding to put off final approval of the project. The King Memorial design was selected through a major national design competition and still seeks to raise almost $50 million in the next year before planners can break ground on the memorial.
Efficiency Modifications Coming to Metrorail: The WMATA board approved yesterday several low cost measures designed to increase the efficiency of the crowded system, the Post reports. In addition to escalator signs urging people to stand to the right which we reported on yesterday, the system will install in February arrows on several platforms indicating where the train will stop so that passengers can be closer to the doors despite concerns WMATA trains don’t always stop in consistant places on station platforms.
Overnight Shootings Leave Two Dead: Three apparently unconnected shootings overnight have left two men dead and one hospitalized, NBC4 reports. They occurred at 14th and Chapin streets Northwest, 2000 block of Savannah Terrace, and 1200 block of Eaton Road, Southeast. Councilmember Jim Graham told his constituents in an email this morning that police are interviewing “persons of interest” in connection with the murder on 14th street, although NBC4 reported police have no suspects for any of the shootings.
