It’s a familiar script for the George Washington mens’ basketball team. Let an inferior team hang around — maybe even lead — until midway through the second half, then go on a devastating run. In the case of last night’s 89-78 win at St. Bonaventure, the Colonials trailed by four with under eight minutes left before reeling off 13 straight points to take control.
Three Colonials finished in double figures in both points and rebounds, led by Omar Williams’ 18 and 10. Danilo Pinnock had 15 and 12, and Mike Hall added 15 and 11. The win is GW’s 25th on the season, a school record. And, with top-ranked Duke losing at Florida State, the Colonials are the only Division I team with a lone loss. GW shoots for a perfect Atlantic Ten regular season with a home game Saturday against Charlotte. The Colonials won comfortably when the two teams met in Charlotte in January. Fans who can’t make it out to the Smith Center can tune in on ESPN starting at 2 p.m.
The Colonials will still be without senior forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu, who had surgery Tuesday to have cartilage removed from his left knee. The AP reports that Mensah-Bonsu will miss the A-10 tournament, but also that Dr. James Andrews, who performed the surgery, said “We expect he will be ready for the NCAA Tournament.”
It’s concerning, to be sure, but it sounds a lot worse than it seems. The surgery is minor and recovery is quick (I know from experience). Pops should be fine for the Big Dance. The major concern is the Atlantic Ten tournament. Not only would winning the championship be nice, but how the Colonials do in their conference tourney will in large part determine what seed they get in the NCAAs.
