In recent weeks, Austria has been the Scott Stapp of the international stage — fending off doping allegations against its Olympic athletes and suffering its first case of the bird flu (no doubt caught while it filmed that nasty video with Moldova and Djibouti).
So, the Republik Österreich desperately needs your moral support in these difficult days. And what better way to give that support than to head over to an Austrian Winemakers’ Wine Tasting Reception at Arlington’s Tallula this Monday, March 6? Austria’s two major grape varietals — riesling and grüner veltliner (sometimes nicknamed “Grü-V” by wine drinkers who clearly watched too many episodes of The Brady Bunch growing up) — result in mineral-like, austere, sometimes citrus-nosed white wines that match wonderfully with everything from schnitzels and roasted pork to Asian fare. The major Austrian reds are Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, each of which tend to be medium-bodied, spice-nosed wines somewhat more tannic than gamay.
But don’t take DCist’s word for it. Stop by Tallula, talk to some visiting Austrian winemakers, and taste their wares — which will be paired with fare from Tallula chef Nathan Anda. Tickets are $55 each for one of two receptions (6 p.m. or 8 p.m.). Visit Tallula cousin Planet Wine’s Web site or call (703) 549-3444 to reserve your spot. Tallula Restaurant, 2761 Washington Blvd., Arlington. (703) 778-5051.
And if wine isn’t your thing (or if you have something against Austria), wait until Wednesday, March 8, when you can visit the Warehouse from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for an Irish beer tasting at an artist reception for photographer Denny Lynch. Alongside photography of breathtaking Éire, the organizers promise “Irish beers, ales, and stouts, and cheeses.” Skeptical of the beer selection and an art show? Well, they’re guaranteed to have more of a selection of Irish beers on hand than does the constantly disappointing Brickskeller, whose bloated list always promises far, far more than it can actually deliver. The Warehouse, 1017-21 7th St. NW. (202) 783-3933.
