Today’s evening commute could be a wild one as around 180,000 demonstrators are expected to gather on the Mall this afternoon, many after marching through the downtown area from Meridian Hill Park. The National Day of Action for Immigrant Justice is expected to draw large crowds of supporters in cities across the nation (and has already begun to do so — some 300,000 gathered yesterday in Dallas). The march through the city will begin around 3 p.m. this afternoon, and the rally on the Mall is set to commence at 4:30 p.m.
Maryland considers Metro extension to BWI: As the effort to extend Metro to Dulles picks up steam, Marylanders are looking to increase their presence on the transit system, as well. The Maryland General Assembly has approved a $1 million study to consider the possibility of extending the Green Line through Fort Meade and ultimately to BWI (TM) Airport. While supporters would like to see such a project, likely to cost at least $2.5 billion, completed within ten years, others feel that a circumnavigating Purple Line should be the top transit priority.
MLK Parade may move to accomodate rainy April: According to a spokesperson for Marion Barry, organizers of the annual April Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in Ward 8 have had enough of the weather whims of the year’s fourth month. After suffering on Saturday through torrential downpours and frigid temperatures, Barry announced it may be time to move the event a little later in the season. The parade was originally held in January to commemorate King’s birthday but was moved to improve the temperatures faced. Last year’s parade was cancelled due to bad weather.
