Puck Picks Penn Property for Newsy Noshing
The second time I ever visited D.C., I saw a sign for the Newseum on I-66 and thought that it was the New-seum. I figured it was some kind of reverse museum that showcased all the stuff that was new, as in the latest in technology, science discoveries, and what have you. It turns out that it’s a museum about the news (as if those elitists in that liberal media need any more navel-gazing). I was disappointed. After six years in Washington, though, I’ve come to love the news, and am anxiously awaiting the opening of the new Newseum next year at 6th St. and Pennsylvania Ave. NW. Though it will likely focus only on the technologies of movable type and the Internet, the Newseum will also be a shiny monument to the freedom of the press. It will also be an opportunity for the humble public to bask in the glory of news about the news, a chance to worship at the journalist’s metashrine.

In an effort to give us a break from the cycle of madness, the Newseum will feature a new restaurant named “The Source” from celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck (hat tip to the lovely women at WaPo’s Reliable Source for sourcing us on The Source). Aimed to be an showcase for “California Cuisine,” the style Puck made famous, the place will also feature riffs on local favorites (we’re assuming Maryland crabs and Virginia hams, not D.C.’s half-smoke).

We do hope chef Puck decides to honor history’s most famous news sources with his dishes. We’ll get joy out of hearing a Bible Belt family call out an order for two Deep Throats and a Linda Tripp.

Cathal’s a Coverboy
If Restaurant Eve and Eammon’s chef Cathal Armstrong keeps giving us news, we’ll keep writing it up. Not only has the chef and his wife Meshelle’s restaurant pulled a ton of Rammy nominations, but they’ve hit the big time. Last week’s TomChat broke the news that Cathal has been named one of Food &Wine magazine’s Best New Chefs for 2006. This put the Eve chef right up there with heavy hitters from places such as New York’s Per Se and Minneapolis’ Five. Congratulations to Chef Armstrong and the whole team at Eve. Have fun in Aspen!
