On, Wisconsin
Thanks to the Jen Haberkorn of the Washington Times for informing us that we’re all becoming a nation of cheeseheads. Though some may be more than willing to join Wisconsinites as members of the club, others may lament the extra lbs. that come with our appreciation for all things caved, aged, and affinage-d. As noted by Haberkorn, “the average American eats 31.3 pounds of cheese per year, 20 percent more than in 1993, according to 2004 U.S. Department of Agriculture figures, the latest available. By 2014, Americans are projected to consume 34 pounds per person annually.” We’re guessing that figure will escalate when Cowgirl Creamery opens in Penn Quarter, allegedly next month. In the meantime, we’ll peruse the selections at Calvert-Woodley, Whole Foods and Cheesetique for our fix.
