In a media-heavy city like Washington, one might pay heed to the Chicago Tribune’s story from yesterday afternoon announcing that a senior law enforcement official told ABC News, “It’s time for you to get some new cell phones, quick,” in reference to the government’s tracking of calls with whistleblowers and other confidential sources. Williams Endorses Cropp: The Post tells us that today D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams will endorse D.C. Council Chairman Linda Cropp for the position that he’s vacating. According to some folks who track city politics (including us — we called this one last year), this isn’t entirely surprising — after all, her only real competition is Coucil-member Adrian Fenty (D-Ward 4), long a Williams foe. The news is to be officially announced at a press conference in Mount Pleasant later today.
Bethesda Resident Indicted in Duke Rape Case: This one is all over the local news today — yesterday afternoon, a grand jury indicted Duke senior and lacrosse team captain, twenty-three-year-old David Evans of Bethesda. As noted by WJLA, Evans was indicted on charges of “first-degree forcible rape, sexual offense and kidnapping,” all of which are tied back to allegations made by a stripper who was hired for a March 13 party in an off-campus house where she claims she was raped and beaten.
Dupont Circle Metro Station Reopens: WJLA tells us that the Dupont Circle Metro station reopened Monday afternoon. This comes after a 49-year-old Metro worker was hit by a train while he was inspecting the tracks over the weekend. This is the second killing involving a Metro employee and the tracks, the first one having occurred this past October. In response, Metro has been stepping up safety training for employees.
